July 2024

Greetings Courts Journal Readers:

We hope your July 4th holiday was wonderful.  We enjoyed seeing your posts from the Peachtree Road Race and this interesting post of an original draft of the Declaration of Independence.  This is a good time to advertise our upcoming Constitution Day event—a discussion with Justice Charlie Bethel and Justice Verda Colvin, that will take place on September 16th at 11:00 a.m. and that will be livestreamed and then archived on our YouTube channel.  The Wellness Institute, sponsored by the Wellness Committee of the State Bar of Georgia, will occur on September 5th– 8th and will include a judicial panel on Sunday.

A rough draft of the Declaration of Independence; Save the Date for our Constitution Day Event; and the Wellness Committee of the State Bar of Georgia CLE event.

We updated our Judicial Council member collage at the beginning of July.   We enjoyed interviewing the new President of the State Bar of Georgia, Ivy Cadle.  Preparing for the new state fiscal year, which began on July 1st, the following Judicial Council Committees met this month:  Judicial Workload Accessment, Budget,  Legislation, and Technology   We are pleased to share some videos of this year’s Hines Award ceremony.  Hines awardees are selected by the Supreme Court of Georgia’s Committee on Justice for Children for excellence in child welfare.  We loved the group picture sent to us by the Georgia judges attending the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges conference.  We enjoyed Chief Judge Gil McBride’s post about the new Courthouse coming along in Columbus, Georgia as well as retired State Court Judge Bill Adams’s letter to the editor of the AJC about improving access to justice.  Congratulations to DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Stacey Hydrick who received the 2024 International Trailblazer Justice Award and to Judge Jane Manning as well as Judge Stephen Knights who were tapped as Instructors at the National Judicial College this past year.

2024-2025 Members of the Judicial Council; An Interview with Ivy N. Cadle, President of the State Bar of Georgia; and an interview with the 2024 Hines Award recipients.

We listened with interest to the Good Judge-ment podcast, Ep. 149: Electronic Security-part 1 with our own Chief Technology Officer, Ben Luke.  We thank Ben’s team for the pictures from the successful Council of Superior Court Judges Conference wrapping up this week.  The IT team is offering a free class on Microsoft Excel Pivot Tables and Slicers via Zoom August 23, 2024 from 12-1. The Council of Accountability Court Judges July newsletter is published, and it is a good time to remind you of their upcoming September conference. We leave you with these inspiring recent posts from judges about their daily work: Judge Rob Leonard presiding over a Veterans Court graduation; Judge Angela Duncan presiding over a drug court graduation and Judge Angela Brown presiding over an adoption proceeding.

Shared success: Posts on Veterans Accountability and Treatment Court graduation presided over by Judge Leonard in Cobb County, a Drug Court graduation presided over by Judge Duncan in Gwinnett County, and a successful adoption presided over by Judge Brown in Cobb County.

Call on us anytime.  Talk to you in August.
