Judge H. Arthur McLane, retired former Chief Judge of the Southern Judicial Circuit, passed away on May 3, 2022. Judge McLane spent 35 years on bench before retiring in 2008, when he became a senior judge. Valdosta Times

Judge William “Bill” Ison died on April 11, 2022 at the age of 87. Judge Ison was appointed to the Clayton Superior Court bench in 1977 by Governor George Busbee where he served until his retirement in 2003. Clayton Crescent

Judge Alton P. Johnson, Chief Magistrate of Carroll County passed away on March 12, 2022. After his appointment in 1998, Judge Johnson was elected as Chief Magistrate for six consecutive terms. Obituary

Judge F. Larry Salmon passed away on November 6, 2021 at the age of 83. Judge Salmon served as a superior court judge in the Rome Judicial Circuit from January 1, 1989 to December 31, 2008. He served as a senior judge until September 2021. Obituary

Justice George Carley, Supreme Court of Georgia, died on November 26, 2020 from complications from COVID-19 at the age of 82. Justice Carley served 14 years on the Georgia Court of Appeals followed by nine years on the Supreme Court of Georgia where he became the Court’s 29th Chief Justice. AJC; AP

Judge Karen Batten, Probate Court of Brantley County, died on October 19, 2020, from complications arising from COVID-19. She was 62 years old and had served the probate court since 2016. Daily Report

Judge Ramon Alvarado, Gwinnett Recorders Court, passed away on July 20, 2020. Judge Alvarado became the first Hispanic judge in Gwinnett County when he was appointed to the Gwinnett Recorders Court in 2019. AJC

Judge Edith Jacqueline Ingram Grant passed away on Friday, June 5, 2020. Before retiring, Judge Grant served as the Hancock County Probate Judge for 36 years. She was the first black woman to serve as probate judge in Hancock County, as well as the entire United States. Obituary

Newton County Juvenile Court Judge Sheri Roberts passed away on April 26, 2020. Judge Roberts was the first woman to serve on the bench for the Alcovy Circuit where she served for 10 years. AJC

Judge Roosevelt Carter, II passed away on March 21, 2020. Judge Carter presided over the municipal courts of Edison, Newton, and Leary, Georgia. Judge Carter also maintained a private practice for over 20 years.

Judge Kent Lawrence passed away on March 13, 2020 at 72. Judge Lawrence was a former UGA football player, police officer, prosecutor, state court judge, and the creator of Georgia’s first DUI treatment court. Red and Black; Obituary
