Judicial Council Actions – December 9, 2016

The Judicial Council, chaired by Chief Justice Hugh P. Thompson, met today at the Carter Center Cyprus Room from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. to discuss a variety of action items and reports.

Veterans Day Profiles

Many of the state’s jurists have served in the US Armed Services.  To help celebrate Veterans Day on November 11, the Judicial Council/AOC spent the month of November recognizing those judges who have served our country both in times of war and peace.

Three Justices Join the Supreme Court of Georgia

On December 7, 2016, Gov. Nathan Deal administered the oath of office to Justice Michael Boggs, Justice Nels Peterson, and Justice Britt Grant.  Justice Boggs fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Chief Justice Hugh P. Thompson.  Justice Peterson and Justice Grant fill two new slots created by the Georgia General Assembly. All three justices will begin work on January 1, 2017.

#AskGAJudges, a Twitter Town Hall

On September 15, the JC/AOC sponsored #AskGAJudges, a Twitter Town Hall to celebrate Constitution Day. Judge Stephen Dillard (@JudgeDillard) and Judge Carla McMillian (@JudgeCarla), both of the Court of Appeals, spent an hour answering questions about Georgia courts, being a judge, and general advice for law student and lawyers.
