An Interview with Devin Cooper: JC/AOC’s IT Polymath

Michelle Barclay:  Thank you so much for allowing me to interview you for the Georgia Courts Journal. I’ve been working with you for a while now.  What is your current job title for the record?

Devin Cooper: My title is Assistant Division Director of Information Technology for the JC/AOC.

MB:  Tell our readers about your path to your current position.

Devin: I’ve always had a passion for technology. I graduated from Georgia Tech with a bachelor’s in Electronic and Computer Engineering. I’ve always enjoyed what I do. I have 30 years of experience in numerous facets of technology, including workstation refreshes, network deployments, life safety systems, application and web development, and cybersecurity. During my eight year tenure with the state of Georgia, I have enjoyed serving and working for the Court of Appeals, and now for the Judicial Council Administrative Office of the Courts. In my new position as Assistant Director of IT, I enjoy solving new problems, using technology and continuing to streamline business processes to bring more efficiency to the Judicial branch.

MB:  What is your favorite part of your job?

Devin: I have several favorite parts of my job. I would say having opportunities to lead teams, to delegate tasks and contributing to strategic decision-making. Within the IT department, our environments are dynamic, and they present constant challenges which can be intellectually stimulating and rewarding to solve. I enjoy the opportunity to problem solve and tackle complex technical issues and find innovative solutions. In my current role I stay up to date on the latest technologies and industry trends which provides opportunities for personal growth. Working closely with my colleagues across different departments fosters collaboration and teamwork and allows me to contribute to the success of various projects and initiatives. Being a member of the leadership team and having a direct impact on the organization’s IT strategy and operations is fulfilling and gratifying. This role involves a range of responsibilities, including project management, budgeting, staff management, and technology implementation. The job provides a very good variety in my day to day tasks.

MB:  I am inspired by that answer.  Do you have any specific goals for 2024?  In other words, by this time next year is there anything you’d like to see implemented or well on its way?

Devin: I have a few goals for the coming year. To continue to expand managed IT services to the state’s Judiciary, to provide our IT services portfolio to more under-resourced courts throughout the state, and to continue providing technical and security consultations to courts and judicial agencies in need. My team and I carry a broad technical skill set and I plan to use that to mentor others by helping them to grow in their careers in IT. My goal is to continue to strengthen the department.

MB: Tell me what you do when you’re not working. What do you do for fun?

Devin:  Well, my response may not be captivating to a lot of people, particularly those in my close circle. But it’s true all the same that I have an enthusiasm for technology and security. In some of my free time I participate in what are called Capture the Flag cybersecurity competitions. These competitions are where participants attempt to solve a variety of challenges related to computer security, cryptography, reverse engineering, and other relevant topics. The goal is to find and exploit security vulnerabilities in systems, all while also defending your own infrastructure from attacks.  Points are awarded for each successful exploit or flag capture. The person with the most points at the end of the competition wins. Participating in these help keep me up to date on the latest security trends. When I’m not tinkering with technology, I enjoy spending time at home with my wife, Tabitha, and our two cats, Julius and Phoebe. I love being outdoors and spending time with close friends and family.
